Is e-Learning For YOU? Discover The Facts About Distance Learning For Yourself!

Whether you're just beginning your career or you already have an established career, e-Learning or Distance Learning MAY just be the tool you need to help you to achieve your career goals. If you are considering e-Learning as a choice to further your career education and your job skills, you may wish to consider the following questions...

Q.  What is e-Learning?

A. e-Learning is an umbrella term that describes learning done at a computer, usually with a network connection, allowing you to learn almost anytime, anywhere, at your convenience.

Q.  What are some of the features and benefits?

  • e-Learning is self-paced and gives students a chance to speed up or slow down as necessary
  • Courses are self-directed, allowing students to choose content and tools appropriate to their differing interests, needs, and skill levels
  • Geographical barriers are eliminated, opening up broader education options
  • 24/7 accessibility makes scheduling easy and allows a greater number of people to attend classes
  • Overall student costs are frequently less, as travel time and associated costs are reduced or eliminated

Q.  Is e-Learning really for ME?

A.  Possibly, but not neccessarily... A lot of different factors can play a part in HOW people learn. Consider that good students in the traditional setting may fair poorly in an online environment, while struggling students may excel with online courses. This can be explained in part due to differences in learning styles. Visual, self-directed learners can do well at online learning, but sometimes others succeed as well because online instructional design is often sophisticated and planned to reach a wide variety of learners.

Of course, one must also take into account the AMOUNT and the TYPE of learning that would be involved. There is obviously a HUGE difference between taking a few personal interest courses online or planning a complete career learning pathway leading to an online degree. As well, it should be noted that SOME TECHNICAL SKILLS are learned more easily in the classroom. Carefully consider ALL the factors in making a LEARNING commitment.

Generally speaking, then, there are important traits or skills that online students MUST possess to be successful. In varying degrees, these traits and skills are:

  1. Self-Directed
  2. Motivated
  3. Inquisitive
  4. Disciplined
  5. Independent
  6. Like to read and write
  7. Able to stay on task
  8. Comfortable with computers
  9. Able to use email, internet browser, word processor
